DJ Boriqua

Hailing originally from Puerto Rico, DJ Boriqua (aka Orlando Felix) was largely inspired by a contagious enthusiasm son of his father to give him one. "I definitely learn much more about Salsa ... But I have to share knowledge and experience I too had the good fortune to meet." How is it different with Latin Bay Area DJ, one of his main objectives in this role is toAssistance in training of music - with its rich history, culture and diversity of the artists that are so hard to contribute to the Latin music movement.

MG: How and when did you start as a DJ?

DJB: I never really thought about being a DJ, but I started buying salsa music while growing up in my native Puerto Rico. After joining the U.S. Air Force stationed in 1992me in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years. Here in the Bay Area, my first opportunity toDJ was Sunnyvale, I have received from Stefano Palmeri at Steppin 'Out Dance Studio

MG: What were some of the most important influences on your development as a DJ?

DJB: My biggest influence was my father. He made the history of Mambo, Guanguanco, Pachanga and other styles of the '50s and '60s. He had so many vinyl at home and we use to listen to music on a daily basis. She told us stories about the music scene in New York and PuertoRico. He also informed about the famous musicians of the time, the instruments played, etc. I'm never satisfied. My brother Danny was also a source of inspiration. He is a great musical figure in Jacksonville, FL - both as a radio DJ and also as a promoter.

MG: What is your current involvement in the SF Bay Area Salsa scene?

DJB: When I was elected (in addition to the best DJs in the Bay Area), 7 for the second consecutive year, the spin Assembly SF BayArea International Salsa Congress. MG: What do you think are the main differences between the Bay Area Salsa Salsa Salsa and other parts of the world?

DJB: Well, I think the SF Bay Area is unique in the variety of dancers. For example, the World Salsa Championships, we had the most finalists in each field. We had first and second division team winners in the Place, 2 and 3 in the division and the Top Ten On2 On1 Division. MG: What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses of the Bay Area Salsa community?

DJB: Our strength is definitely the unity of the salsa scene. Weseem to support each other here and outside the Bay Area. We are really proud of the product from this region. Our weakness is perhaps the fact that we fall victims of our success. if all that turns out to be successful in the scene trying to make money, it could be the scene is also divided, resulting in an effect of "dilution" of what a whole offered.

Pre-visit your client!
Having a meeting with your clients is essential. It not only allows you to build a good rapport, but also reassures your clients that you confidently know what you are doing.

Discuss at length the program timings of the day including the meal, speeches and buffet, as well as disco entertainment start and end timings, and whether features of the program include 'cutting of the cake' and traditional 'throwing of the bouquet'!

Prepare for the big day
One of the best tips I was ever given was don't leave everything to the last minute. Make sure you have everything ready before the day, and not on the day.

Ensure that any paperwork that the venue requires is forwarded well in advance of the function date and confirm this with the department head, if you already participate.

There is no excuse to be turned away from a scene in extremis, because the certificate of public liability insurance has been left at home! The reputation of your service is definitely more than a nose dive, so a little preparation goes a long, long way.

Getting to the big day!
I usually enough time to the venue for possible traffic problems! Upon arrival, my first task is to inform the functionmanager that I'm on site. With everything in place and operational including room lighting adjustments, I'll discretely make my checks keeping sound levels to an absolute minimum. Once satisfied, I'll go and freshen up and get changed and then inform the function manager that I'm ready.

The Reception
Although early on, I'll gauge the level of background music to the number of guests entering the room so it's not too loud and not to quiet. If you intend to offer a more personalised approach then its an idea not to 'hide' behind the gear but take the opportunity to greet the guests as they enter the room.

Once the wedding party have entered the function room, I'll ask the Bride and Groom to inform when they will be ready for their first dance, and which group of people I need to speak to (to discuss the subsequent dance order) if applicable.

Once everyone in the party knows when they will be dancing (and with whom), as soon as the Bride and Groom are ready, I'll lower the background music, make my introductions, welcome the Bride and Groom to the dance floor and introduce their first dance.

Any planned wedding party dances will follow the first dance which will then allow you to settle into building a party atmosphere.

HOWEVER! Of course there's no hard rule on which music you should play early on, but it might be a bit disheartening should you choose to play all top tracks before the buffet! Sure, it's a balancing act but the general consensus with functions is that the disco usually gets really going AFTER the buffet is served.

Closure
