DJ Tips On Mixing - Where Can A Beginner Learn To Mix?

Its important when you start out to learn the skills as a DJ that you get as much help as
possible! Finding as many tips, tricks & methods as possible will help educate yourself as a
DJ. In this article we will talk about some of the DJ tips on mixing you need to understand
as a beginner DJ and find out where you can learn to mix.

So lets jump straight in on this... Where can a beginner learn to mix? Well there are a
number of places a beginner DJ can learn to mix. If your old enough to hit the clubs, you can
watch the DJ from a distance. This is always a good starting point as you get to see a DJ
perform in real time in front of an audience. So hitting the clubs and observing the DJ in
action is advised!

If you want to take the observation more seriously, you can get a job as a light jock in a
nightclub. Now granted the pay is pretty low, however a light jock is in the best position to
watch a DJ's success and failure at entertaining a dance floor. Getting a job as a light-jock
will also give you the opportunity to gain contacts with DJ's that visit the club. You may
also have the opportunity to practice Djing on the clubs sound system when the club is closed
during the off hours in the day time. This proves to be invaluable experience for your
learning curve.

You can also think about getting a job as a mobile DJ. You can join an agency and get work
through them. These companies are often eager to hire and train new and up and coming DJs.
Using this channel can be a wise move and if you choose to do this you will want to make sure
that the agency will invest in you and teach you how to mix!

Finally, I think one of the best ways to learn if you are completely on your own is to watch
short video instructions of someone that knows exactly what they are doing. A DJ that has
been in the game for a long time and knows the in's and out' of Mixing. Trying to read from a
book is never really much use as you need a good imagination to follow the text instructions.
With video you can watch and learn exactly what is being taught and its much easier to
follow.

DJ Lessons

Becoming a DJ is more than spending a few hundred dollars for a shiny new pair of turntables and a mixer. Need to know how to use the equipment, what are the different functions of the mixer and use it effectively. Even more, you must learn to talk to you the public. While initially daunting, there are several ways to learn to be a DJ, if you are interested in private lessons from someone who was doing theor dance lessons for years at a college DJ in the country. Here are some ways to get your feet wet and get the ball, how to scratch like a pro.

In 2002, Jam Mastery Jay of Run DMC, along with Rob Principe, founded the Scratch DJ Academy. The academy is to help people "learn the DJ art form, its culture and history," said zero www dot com, the website of the school. There are various courses availableintroduction to DJing and mixing rates for scratching lessons and courses in music production. The Academy is also incredibly accurate boot camps, the five-day intensive courses in basic classes for intermediate and advanced mixing and scratching.

Of all the ways to get DJ lessons, visit the Scratch DJ Academy is probably the best method. There are courses and private lessons in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. The school hasmusicians incredible teacher, and many are saying is good, as can be seen throughout the site.

The Internet is another point of departure for DJ lessons. While in pursuit of a tutor, it is easy to travel booked with a wealth of information, DJs and others in the network. This eventuality is DJtutorial dot com is a site created by a DJ with all the information it has collected during hisCareer.

Dj lessons expensive?

For those worried about the price of a high school music, almost all of his teachings for the incredibly low dollar amounts, with the most expensive are about $ 20 when ordered on CD. You can also give private lessons when something is just not clear enough through downloadable lessons.

An alternative to the DJ Schooling

Another way to DJlessons is much simpler than the others: you can simply proposition a DJ for one-on-one time. Many people DJ for extra income, and paying a tutor is something entirely in the realm of possibility. If you are at a club and a DJ is doing a bang up job, he will usually have a business card or contact information for setting up future gigs. Contacting them about simple lessons is a great way for you to learn and for them to make a bit of extra money on the side. Do not pester, as it can be stressful trying to cater to a large club. With a DJ in the midst of scratching with his headphones on it is entirely likely that he will have absolutely no idea that you are there in the first place.

Why? Many people can listen in the car, or put it on easy at home if they have a free minute. You may not have a chance, take a lookMix in the Internet and yet the sound quality better in the demo CD and streaming on the Internet.

What do I need to see?

What a good club / bar owner or the promoter is basically the ability to fill his seat and happy people, so come and see it again next time. Bettors have a good time. First of all, the best kind of promo CD is an excellent choice for the melody of the songs show your ability to follow up with the right, as a climax, how can we build the mixture and mix your music a lot well, as you are pro.

1. The correct choice of title

If you have a DJ practicing a lot, it isget an idea of what to go with which tracks. Schedule your tracks carefully and remember, boot from the CD quickly caught the attention of the heavily.
Use fresh new songs that make you have potential, but are still played by a few people. Avoid the use of simple melodies and played all the disc jockey for 6 months. Drop in the odd remix of a song that old, correspondence or even a return to classic floorfiller a bit '. This shows your knowledge and depthTaste.

Start with a catchy melody, then build during the following items which about 70% shortly after opening your audience. Then they approach in time to finish, with some songs, the choice is less energetic, but the depth of feeling, so that the audience is emotionally affected by this experience.

The mixture should last at least 50 minutes, but preferably not more than 1 hour.

4. Set up your recording properly

This part is easy of course, but many people still need it explained to them. Hook up your decks to your mixer, and the main output of your mixer to both your PC and your amplifier. Your mixer should have a main output and a recording output. You'll need some RCA cables to hook them up to your amp and your PC. Most likely, your soundcard 'in'.

Use a CD printer to customise your CDs and send them to you. It'll cost you a few $£EUR but will be worth it.

You will need to design the cover yourself, or get a friend who is skilled in graphics to help you.

DJ Spotlight Feature Interview - DJ BoriQua - One-On-One Exclusive

Intro

DJ Boriqua

Hailing originally from Puerto Rico, DJ Boriqua (aka Orlando Felix) was largely inspired by a contagious enthusiasm son of his father to give him one. "I definitely learn much more about Salsa ... But I have to share knowledge and experience I too had the good fortune to meet." How is it different with Bay Area Latin DJ, one of his main objectives in this role is tohelp educate about the music - with its rich history, culture and the diversity of the artists who have contributed so greatly to the Latin music movement.

DJ BoriQua speaks to some of the differences we may barely notice or acknowledge about the music we hear played on the radio, at Latin music and dance events, and in the clubs that we attend. Most likely, it's because most of us have no idea what we're REALLY listening and/or dancing to! You might be in a popular San Francisco club playing old school salsa (salsa in its purest form); then just twenty minutes down the peninsula, you could find yourself in another club, bathed in a Central or South American salsa flavor with music that comes out of Colombia!

Interview

MG: How and when did you get started as a DJ?

DJB: I never really intended to be a DJ, but I started buying salsa music while growing up in my native Puerto Rico. After joining the U.S. Air Force in 1992, they stationed me in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years. There, I started buying insane amounts of Salsa CD's - to keep me close to the feeling of home. ;-) In 1999 I was deployed to Saudi Arabia, where I began DJing "Latin Night", alongside other military members, as part of the Air Force's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program. I continued Djing "Latin Night" in the Air Force at South Korea (2000), and finally inside Travis Air Force base in Fairfield, CA (2001-2003). Here in the Bay Area, my first opportunity to DJ was given to me by Stephanie Palmeri at Steppin' Out Dance Studio in Sunnyvale.

MG: What were some of the primary influences on your development as a DJ?

DJB: My most major influence would be my father. He educated me on the history of Mambo, Guanguanco, Pachanga, and other styles from the 50s and 60s. He had so many vinyls in the house and we use to listen to the music on a daily basis. He would tell us stories about the music scene in New York City and Puerto Rico. He also informed us about the famous musicians of the time, the instruments they played, etc. I never got tired of it. My brother Danny has also been an inspiration. He is a major music figure down in Jacksonville, FL - both as a radio DJ and also as a promoter.

MG: What is your current involvement in the SF Bay Area salsa scene?

DJB: Currently, I've been selected (alongside the hottest DJs in the Bay Area), to spin for the second year in a row at the 7th Annual SF Bay Area International Salsa Congress. I am one of the resident DJs at GlasKat Lounge in San Francisco, alongside DJ Super Chino and DJ EldelaClave. With the help of Rodney "Rodchata" Aquino, I became one of the resident DJs at Sh Boom! Nightclub in San Ramon, where DJ Super Chino spins as well. I am the DJ for the Annual Sonoma County Salsa Festival in Santa Rosa and assist EldelaClave at the AfinKao dance company's monthly social at The Beat studio in Berkeley. . . where I am one of the principal dancers. In addition to these DJ responsibilities, I also teach a beginner On1 salsa dance class at Gold's Gym in Santa Clara, alongside my beautiful girlfriend Nashely.

MG: How would you describe your particular style?

DJB: I try to DJ at a tempo where the dancers can interpret the music. You also have to be aware of the crowd where you are DJing. So, I'd like to think that I spin for the dancers . . . being that I am one of them.

MG: What do you think are the primary differences between salsa in the Bay Area salsa and salsa in other parts of the world?

DJB: Well, I think the SF Bay Area is unique because of the diversity in dancers. For example, in the World Salsa Championships, we've had finalists in most every division. We had 1st and 2nd place winners in the team divisions, 2nd and 3rd in the On2 division, and top ten in the On1 division. That's a lot of talent and as you can see, we are well represented across the board. In the nightclub scene, you can find live music almost every night of the week somewhere in the Bay Area. Sometimes you'll have two or more venues with live bands on the same night! We are truly blessed in the Bay Area to have so many options to support and celebrate our love of Latin music and dance!!

MG: What would you say are the strengths/weaknesses in the Bay Area salsa community?

DJB: Our strength is definitely the unity in the salsa scene. We seem to support each other here and outside of the Bay Area. We are really proud of the product that comes out of this region. Our weakness might be the fact that we can fall victim to our own success. if everybody that turns out successful in the scene tries to make a buck, it could lead to the scene being too divided, which could lead to a "watered down" effect of what's offered overall.

Presently, I think we're where we're supposed to be . . . UNITED!!

MG: The Bay Area is renowned for innovation in many pursuits and salsa is no exception. What is your reaction to what Giju has done with his first, and first ever Hindi/Salsa cross-over album "Rang Rangeeli yeh Duniya?

DJB: I remember back in 1991 I saw Orquesta De La Luz (Japanese Salsa Band) perform at the University of Puerto Rico and I thought to myself, "Wow, this is amazing!!!" Today, we have Giju fusing Hindi with Salsa and he hit it out of the park!!! Truly, Salsa is worldwide, crossing all boundaries!! The sky is the limit for him and I wish him all the best of luck with this and any other project he has coming in the future.

MG: What do you think is the most important role of the DJ?

DJB: To know your music. You are part of the salsa movement when you decide to spin. Be one with the dancers and the listeners who attend your events. Always remember . . . they are there to support you, so don't let them down. There's nothing better than seeing a listener bobbing their head up and down while they down rum and cokes, almost in a trance like state. And those dancers that let you know what a great job you did that particular night - there's no better feeling than that!

MG: What changes would you like to see in the Bay Area salsa community and in the salsa scene at large?

DJB: I'd like to see more social dancing by the troupe performers. Performing is a beautiful thing, but bring your dancing to the social floor so you can inspire the casual guy/girl attending an event. Let them say, "Man, I wanna dance like that!!!"

MG: Is music your full-time career or do you have another vocation you pursue in addition to your role as DJ?

DJB: Believe it or not, I am an Air Traffic Controller at San Carlos Airport on the Peninsula. I've been a controller for over 16 years (11 of them in the Air Force). I DJ and instruct as my side gigs. I'm also a proud parent. My son Devin is 13 and my daughter Brianna is 9. They live in South Carolina.

MG: Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

DJB: I'm proud to be a part of the Bay Area salsa scene. I've made some great friends as a part of this experience, DJs, dance company directors, and everyday dancers and supporters of the scene. Every single one of them work hard to inspire others and for that, we should be grateful.

Thank you for the opportunity to express myself.

* * *

Thank you for spending this time with us, DJ BoriQua. We will look forward to learning more of what you have to share AND to catch you along with several other of our top DJs including: DJ Fab Fred, DJ El dela Clave, DJ La Coqui, DJ Frank and DJ Nelson Flores at the upcoming premiere west coast salsa event:

We're so fortunate with the level of DJ talent present here in the SF Bay Area. Next time you're out dancing and hear a song you appreciate, let the DJ know - inquire about the artist, the origin, the era of the music. It might just broaden your mind. . . and will definitely enrich your experience of SALSA!!

Learn to DJ - The Required Equipment

If you are looking into learning how to DJ, you will need to know what equipment you need and how it all fits together. In this article we will discuss the basic equipment that will get you started.

Decks

You will need at least 2 decks to be able to mix songs together. Each deck will have a track playing on it. When deciding what type of decks you want, you have a few options:

Turntable - these play vinyl and are quite redundant nowadays.
CDJ -these plays CDs and the pioneer CDJ1000 MK3 is an industry standard.
DJ Controller - these are typically used with laptops so you can mix with MP3s.

Mixer

The decks are plugged into a mixer which allows you to control how loud each deck is. Mixers tend to have features that change the sound being played, for example reducing the bass frequencies.

Effects unit

Some mixers have built-in effects such as the popular Pioneer DJM-800. Other mixers have the option of attaching an effects unit to them. These give you the ability to add echo, delay, flanger, auto-panning and much more. A good effects unit will be able to sync the effect to the bpm of the song (in other words, the speed the song is playing at) so it sounds great.

Monitors

A good pair of studio monitors (i.e. speakers) will give you a good sound and help you create that perfect mix. The monitors are also connected to the back of the mixer. In fact, most mixers have outputs to connect to more than one set of speakers with a volume knob for each.

Headphones

Unless you want everybody to hear your mixing attempts, you should get a pair of headphones to connect to the mixer. This will allow you to prepare the mixing of the current song into the next song before it can be heard out loud. A good quality pair that does not leak sound is fine.

In this article we discussed the basic equipment that is required to learn how to DJ.

DJ Hero - Review From a Real Battle DJ

Activision has released DJ Hero, the latest and greatest in the music/gaming industry. First, let me give you my experience with DJing. I'm a Hip Hop Battle DJ that has competed in many competitions, but have yet to win first. Been close, but that doesn't count, anyway, on with my review/opinion.

First, I was very excited to see the DJ Hero commercial the other night. Finally, a DJ simulation that has the look and feel of real DJ'ing. The game itself is packaged with a turntable and a mixer designed to integrate with your xBox, Wii, or PS2/3. Out of the box, you can start to mix down songs just like a real DJ.

The turntable/mixer combo can be configured for either lefties, or righties, which is a very nice feature. I, as being right handed, but in my mixing and scratching, I'm more of a lefty, go figure. The turntable rotates just as a real turntable does, but is not motor driven. The turntable also contains three buttons (green, red, blue) which are used to assist in the game play, and perform functions such as queuing songs, or indicating which track you are scratching with. I find this to be a very interesting concept, as it will give you the feel of really scratching songs without having to spend thousands on DJ equipment, as I have.

The track list is very extensive as well, and poses some very interesting combinations of songs to mix down. Some of the more interesting mixes, to me at least are:

50 Cent - "Disco Inferno" vs. David Bowie - "Let's Dance"
Beastie Boys - "Intergalactic" vs. Blondie - "Rapture"
Black Eyed Peas - "Boom Boom Pow" vs. Benny Benassi - "Satisfaction"
Eminem - "My Name Is" vs. Beck - "Loser"
Jay-Z - "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" vs. Eminem - "My Name Is"

With over 90 different songs in the track listing, this game looks to bridge the gap of people that have always wanted to try to DJ, but did not want to shell out the money for a turntable setup - which can get very expensive. Trust me on that.

DJ Music List - Your Number 1 Tool to Your Success As a DJ

The #1 tool for a DJ is the DJ Music List. After all, what is a DJ without music? And more to the point... what is a DJ without the RIGHT music?

Even the worlds best DJ equipment will be totally worthless without the right music to play for the audience. Building skills in "reading crowds" and knowing what to play and when to play it can take years of experience to get it right. Many people think this is an overstatement, hey... how hard can it be to just stand there and play music right?

Yes, it can look very easy. And a good DJ makes it look easy. He or she plays the tunes that keep people dancing (or chilling etc... depending on the venue / event). But have you ever been to an event or venue with a bad DJ? Hopefully for your sake you haven't! But if you have, you will know exactly what I am talking about. It is the venue where nobody is dancing, everyone is complaining about the music and it is probably pretty empty as everyone looks for somewhere better to go.

Notice that nobody would have been complaining about the DJ's equipment? No, they complain about the MUSIC! It is the MUSIC that makes or breaks a DJ. The DJ music list is absolutely KEY to success.

Forget buying all the expensive DJ equipment, get you music library sorted out FIRST! Think about it, people don't listen to equipment, they listen to music. You can have the newest, shiny equipment with tons of lights and buttons but 99% of people don't care! They just want to listen to music!

It is the DJ who controls the tempo of the party and ensures that everyone has a great time jiving to his style of music.

However a great DJ is nothing without a proficient set of equipments to help him churn out the beats. Some of the basic equipments that are essential are CD player or deck, sound mixers, headphones and speakers. How To DJ Like a Pro and Work Your Crowd

To the outsider to learn how DJ can be quite simple. Learn to be a professional DJ is as easy to say than done when most professionals to spend time, its phono and try to hit to create a huge amount as before, they're perfect.

Here are some tips to learn as a professional DJ and drive the audience wild.

1. Their equipment DJ

This is the most important decision of your DJCareer. What you need to make music that make more, and where do you get? Deciding whether to go with traditional equipment such as turntables, mixer and vinyl records, or if you are with the modern approach that is all going to digital, which requires only a murderess rhythm you want to make the software and a laptop. The latter is certainly more convenient. However, without proper equipment and the confidence to use it all, you are never able to be the last DJ and beginyour own original music. So, either get prepared to spend some serious money; because turntables, mixers and vinyls will cost a small fortune, or get ready to grab an affordable killer beat making software for your laptop devise.

2. Your vision as a DJ

What do you want to create? To make your own killer beats is one thing and of course its completely ok to experiment and play with different genres while learning how to DJ. It's perfectly normal to play around and get a feel for what you like and don't but in the end, if you want to start marketing yourself as a real DJ, you need to know what the essence of your music is and what category it falls into. Would your music be described more as drum n base or house music? Or maybe hip hop. Or progressive trance? These are definitely things you want to clarify before trying to kick start your DJ career

3. Your DJ Image

This will be heavily based on your vision as the two work together. For example, I once had a buddy who was a successful DJ for years. His DJ stage name was 'DJ Spider' or something to that effect and he loved spinning progressive house music. What made his shows particularly memorable was that throughout his set he would gradually peel back a layer of his clothing exposing pieces of a costume. The crowd would roar as the beats pounded and each time you would look up there was something different about the DJ. By the end of his set he would be busting out his beats in a full on spiderman costume fully equipped with a hood and gloves! Can you imagine? Well, needless to say the crowd went absolutely bonkers!

DJ Entertainment

A DJ can provide entertainment through the use of props by using such things as, Dry Ice, Disco Balls and Large Dice for games to be used at wedding parties or social galas. Other props that can be used by DJ's are Laser lighting and enhanced microphones to add a great sound to any party. Having said all that a DJ can offer to truly entertain their guest or audience, we have not even touched upon the music. A DJ has to be able to be up to speed with all the latest and greatest genres of music out there because not only will the guests come to the DJ to request songs, however, a DJ has to be the one to set the mood, and there is nothing better to do that then with music.

The question, however, is finding a DJ that has the capabilities to provide you with a rare combination of playing great entertaining music all the while offering you with great props. While we would all want to be able to find a DJ with all that, let alone hire one, however, you have the chance to have your wedding party or corporate gathering, be truly entertaining. With the latest props to enhance any social event, and always playing the latest and greatest music.

So the next time, it is entertainment that you want, and need a DJ to provide it, remember that you want a DJ that plays the best music a party needs and has all the props that makes your party truly entertaining.

Recent advances in DJ Equipment

The days of the pillars of DJ equipment was nothing more than a mixer to mix and have long since passed. These days, with equipment dj with the best technology is one of the most important parts to a successful DJ, and if a match is not over time, is likely to end up as obsolete as eight-track player.

is the most important progress in recent memory in the DJ Equipment you can have as an elementuntil all recognized for its use as material for DJ: Apple iPad. With an extension of the user interface of Apple with the iPhone and iTouch developed and is the iPad exactly what its name says: a screen-shaped tablet size slightly smaller than a piece of paper that the user interacts with a touchscreen.

As a piece of DJ Equipment, iPad, the functions of different elements, DJs already use. It naturally contains MP3 function, the longVersion of the CD, as a DJ most primary sources of music. There are also applications for the iPad, or as a mixer, so that the Finger Beats DJ provide the cooler with a single click.

Perhaps most exciting, iPad has an application that replaces the old, perhaps the most important pieces of DJ equipment: the turntable. While there are computer programs that can create the same effect as a hub that allows iPad Touch DJinteract with music in a way that is much more comparable to find turntable like a real mouse on a laptop. Sun armed with an iPad, a DJ can scratch a funky sound on a device similar to a feeling like a real set of dishes, without the hassle of dragging behind them. And that's not to mention the money does not destroy the music played in the process saved the scratching.

Specifically designed pieces of equipment are also DJincreasingly digital, most notably the mixer. For example, the Sixty-Eight-mixer, designed by Rane, the first mixer, the synchronization of two laptops with Scratch Live, a turntable emulation of the above programs. Although this may not seem like much, in advance DJ equipment makes this an alternative to digital turntable true that much more interesting because it allows a DJ to create the kind of complex characters, the units are made up of twoat once. Sixty-eight years, four USB ports, making it much easier for a number of DJs in the mixer, simply unplugging their laptops when someone new takes over the application.

Another piece of DJ equipment that progress has been made recently headphones. For example, the HDJ-founded in 2000 by Pioneer, and extremely high quality stereo sound, while also comfortable enough that the DJ is not through the itching ears in the middle of a sentence to be distracted. WhileHeadphones tracks may not seem like a particularly important piece of DJ equipment, their ability to have different DJ sample as clear as possible in a noisy environment is a key factor for anyone looking for a top-tier DJs.

Learn How To Mix - The Basic DJ Skills Course

When most people think of a great DJ - DJ really admire you, think of a DJ with excellent mixing capabilities. If you are ever to be good enough, a bit 'bigger than your aunt's wedding or your little sister's school dance is in progress, you must be able to sleep in the mix.

we come to the subtleties of what it will take so you learn to mix.

The first thing to do is go out onrecord store (you know, the place where he had all these months and paycheck last month) and buy two of the same record. Ideally, this record is going to be something we really out of phase and is not too complex. Do not try, Paul Van Dyk and still beats you buy a little 'complicated. We just try to hang it up.

Now you can go home and all your belongings DJ set. At this point I expect that you spent a couple of hours trying todays, or weeks playing around with this and trying to make it sound great but had little luck. Yes, I know you aren't reading this without trying it first. Who can resist playing with their brand new decks, mixer, cross-fader, and amp?

Well since you couldn't master it on your own, try to follow these instructions and do it step-by-step with me. I will admit that a video lesson if this is much easier to learn from. That's why I tell me students to buy a series of Learn How To DJ videos if they really want to learn how to be a great DJ. I mean, you can learn this stuff by yourself over time, but do you really want to do your first gig in the nursing home?

Anyways, put both records (it's the same record, remember?) on the decks. Set the cross-fader to the middle position so you can hear both records equally. Start one of the decks a-spinning.

Now isn't this exciting? If you can stick with me here for about five more minutes, you are going to learn to mix like a pro dj.

Now take a listen to your record and find a good bass beat. Got it? Slowly spin the record in reverse with your finger until you get to the start of the beat. Easy as pie!

Now pause that deck and start the other one. Pretty much what we are going to do is get the other deck going and try to drop your stopped deck on top of the moving deck in time so the (imaginary) audience doesn't spill their drink and sneer at you up in the DJ booth.

So as you get near the beat, start your other deck and hold that record in place... and as the beat nears, DROP THE DECK. If all goes well, the beats should sinc up.

Now if this worked the first time, then you are a natural. For most people it just doesn't happen the first time. It takes practice. But that's what this game is all about. Like everything, practice makes perfect. And also, not to beat a dead horse, but if you can get someone to teach you hands-on how to do this you are going to be in a lot better shape. You can see some free sample videos or my favorite DJ Video course here. Now all you have to do is keep practicing, and work up to some more difficult records. I know you'll be tempted to try and do all sorts of wild stuff off the bat, but you've got to get the basics down first. We all had to learn to kiss before we moved on to the bigger stuff, so take your time.

How to Be a DJ for Real

How would a DJ is a skill that, if asked, most kids want to learn '. And 'the idea of the lifestyle of girls, parties and music that makes it look like the life of rock star. Now learn how to be a DJ is not all fun and games!

These things can also learn a DJ is hard work and perseverance to obtain the reward.

I started DJing when I was in my teens. I grew up in a small town and it seemedeveryone was DJing at the moment, because not much else to do in order. The good thing about this was, I had a lot of people around me the same thing that is not something that I have many hobbies that I can say that. I think this is a very important thing when learning a new hobby, because it keeps things fun and motivating. If you can not but have to do, there are things that help, that would tell me later in this article.

To tell the truth IIt was a nice late start to learn, like a DJ. Even if the guys around me were all DJing and hosting free rave in the woods, I was more interested in smoking pot and just bumming around. Why do I say this? Maybe because I want a shoulder to lean on my wasted youth, but other than that is to say to you, you want to DJ and have a passion for it, or what's the point? So at this point in my life I was not too DJing and as a result of my abilitywere shoddy and pretty much nonexistent simply because I didn't care too much and didn't hardly practice.

So what is the next tip I'm giving you? Yea yea I know you are fed up of hearing it but it's what separates the amateurs from the pros- it's PRACTICE. I quickly watched my friends who were throwing parties race ahead of me in their skills since they would love to practice and go round each other's houses many times a week to mix. So yea, motivation comes 1st then practice. I on the other hand was still not bothered about my DJing and was happy to watch them improve their skills (although secretly a little envious) while I sat back and enjoyed what they were spinning.

Fast forward a few years and I still had my decks but had moved to a new city and new friends. After having quite the break from DJing I got back into it again once I found some buddies who were into MCing. It was a bit of a different scene here since where I lived before everyone was a DJ with hardly any MCs but now it was the other way round. There were loads of MCs with not many DJs. So I became the main DJ for my group of friends. We would often come round to my house for a mixing session to my father's dismay and rave it up of an evening.

This time round I would practice more and enjoy the practice. This is another main point. To stick at it I think you've gotta enjoy it which is pretty easy when you have a passion for the music you're playing. DJing can be a great feeling when you really get in the flow of it and you're riding the beats in the mix which brings me to my next point...

One of the most important skills you are going to master in learning how to be a DJ is learning to beatmatch. Beatmatching is the core skill of any budding DJ cos without it all the other fancy skills such as chopping scratching or even plain fading will sound worse than a barrel of apples falling off the cart. For those who don't know beatmatching is where you match the tempo of one track to the next track and bring them together in the mix so they sound harmonious.

Even if you are not a DJ yourself you will have heard a sloppy out of time mix in a club before and know it sounds bad. I think this is the main skill which really lets a lot of Djs down because it really leaks into your other skills if it isn't tight.

So how to beatmatch? To be honest I think I was a hard case when learning to beatmatch. It literally felt like it took me 5 years to learn but in fairness looking back I really didn't apply myself to it like I could have. This is why why I am writing this article to encourage budding Djs to avoid the pitfalls I faced.

One of the main things you are gonna find when learning to become a DJ and learning to beatmatch is at the start you will sound like total crap. The thing with beatmatching is that until you are good at it your mixes are gonna sound like total garbage and if you are anything like me you will be embarrassed to play in front of anyone else with your 'flabby' out of time mixes. This is the critical time for patience and persistence because beatmatching is so important for a mix sounding decent you must get this down before moving on to other skills. Once you learn beatmatching all the other techniques will flow from there. I found once I learned beatmatching that my confidence to DJ in front of others really shot up and that was when I really began to enjoy it.

Thing is though, it is going to be really frustrating at first because not only can you not mix you are butchering your favourite tunes as they sound more out of step than a drunk granny who lost her walker.

So here I really want to drive home the importance of having patience. Lock yourself away from your friends if you have to while you learn it. Become like a DJ monk going into a period of deep meditation. It won't matter if they wonder what happened to you because once you learn to beatmatch they and the girls will all be running to your side and want your attention with your newfound skills. PERSIST PERSIST PERSIST. Slowly but surely you will see progress and the great thing about that is that it will motivate you onwards more and more inch by inch. Learning how to be a DJ is a process.

Be The Best DJ on The Mic

Increase Your Overall Performance

DJ's usually master mixing and choosing the right songs relatively quickly, but most DJ's fail to master their MC work.

It can be one of the most important factors in performing a great event. If the DJ does not know what to say, or doesn't say it correctly it can greatly diminish his performance.

When hiring people do not want to just hear music, they want the DJ to have a personality. If they just wanted music to play all night, most people would just buy a radio and use that to play music.

So, the key is to generate an atmosphere were the crowd feels that you have brought the event alive.

To increase your skill on the mic, you will need to do the same thing you did to learn mixing and using the equipment....

Practice, Practice, Practice

Set your equipment up at home and keep practicing. Simulate an event. Go through all the motions of a wedding and use the same enthusiasm that you would use at a party.

Watch some other DJ's and take notes, go home and practice. The key is to do a better job than him.

Build Your Own Personality

You should takes notes, but adopt your own mic style, You want to get ideas from other DJ's but you want to be yourself. Use your own lines and make sure you don't rely on the same clichés 20 or 30 times a night, this will become annoying to the crowd.

You want to be original, if you sound like another DJ, they might as well book him. If you have your own lines, and your own personality, when they like it they will be sure to book you again.

During certain events you will need to be on the mic more than others. If the event doesn't call for you to be on the mic too much, DON'T BE. If it requires you to do mic work, make sure you can come through, and you have the skills.

The key to mic work, is confidence. The crowd can sense your confidence, and they wont enjoy a DJ that is not confident in his professional work.

Avoid talking fast, you want to have a clear sounding voice that people understand and enjoy. Speaking too fast will make what you are saying sound garbled, speaking too slowly will make you sound like you are addressing a bunch of village idiots.

With time and practice, you will develop your own individual skill and style and that's the most important aspect. Don't try to copy anybody else or put on a different voice; it will sound false and make learning and maintaining the technique a lot more difficult.

What to Say, What Not to Say

If being funny is not your strength, then avoid the jokes. If you end up telling jokes and you are not good at it, you may end up being the only one laughing, creating an awkward scenario. You want to stick at doing what you are good at, and have been booked for, and if in doubt leave it out.

If something amusing happens, then share it, use the mic to receive requests, make a fuss over other people celebrating birthdays/anniversaries. People like to have their 30 seconds of glory and hearing their name mentioned over the PA system.

Avoid talking over vocals, try to wait for thm to end before speaking.

You should start with the easy announcements, introducing tracks and buffet announcements. Once you've built up a bit of confidence, you can move on. Try to include your audience; invite requests and make them feel welcome.

If you make a mistake don't dwell on it, just continue, many times the audience won't even notice.

Prepare Your Self

Keep key information on the gig, such as the Bride & Grooms' names, Best Man's Name etc on a piece of paper on the mixer, so that you can look down and refresh your memory if you have a sudden memory blank.

You Don't want to be writing down your lines though. You want them to sound natural, writing the names down is just for a reference.

After you have people on the dance floor, you should ease up on using the mic, they are up and dancing to the music not for your voice.

This will take time, you won't go from a beginner to pro over night, but practice and time will make you the best DJ ever.

How to DJ Like a Pro - Learn to Read the Crowd and Whip Up a Dance Floor Frenzy

Tune into the crowd. They can feel it when you can. When your heart beats faster and you're excited, they can feel it too. No one knows exactly why, they just can. The key point is, it AIN'T SCIENCE! We don't understand everything in this world. We can only try to feel what we can't understand.

When you whip up the floor, the energy bounces off the crowd back to you and then you bounce it right back. Some people have the natural ability to tune in, others take longer but get it eventually. It's like you're dancing with the audience, reacting to each other's movements.

Reading their vibes and picking up their signals is the first part, knowing how to react is the second part. What's that girl who's dancing away doing? Can you follow up this tune with something even better?

Here are the top tips for reading and reacting to crowds:

1. Pay attention to their reactions

When you play out, you'll have to pay a fair amount of attention to your mix and your choice of music. However, just as importantly, remember to watch your crowd and to try to read their reactions too. By this I mean taking regular looks at your punters, feeling the atmosphere and adapting your music to it. Do you have more girls than boys? Do they look more bling, more rave or more indie? When you try out that new electro tune do they start smiling and perking up, some of them jigging a bit? If so, try more of that style.

The way people react to different styles you try on them is key to knowing what musical path to follow. This doesn't mean following every request every drunk girl makes to play Abba or Whitney Houston, but it does mean that you're playing for the crowd and you should play what they want, not what you want. You're not DJing for yourself.

2. Know your musical styles

Pretty obvious you may say. Not really in fact, you'd be surprised. The best DJs have a wealth of different styles and a back up for anything that may not go as planned. That is to say, do not turn up with just a single musical style in your repertoire. Don't play house and have nothing else to play when you've been asked to play in a place where house clearly doesn't go down well. Experiment with other styles and when you get a positive reaction, it means you're on the path to a better night.

If you're playing in an indie place, don't play techno. You'll get ideas from the look of the people about their musical tastes. Get into the habit of guessing what music people enjoy and trying it out on them. Of course, this all comes down to knowing your music well enough, which you can read our tips on right here.

3. Check out the venue beforehand

When it's possible, check out a venue you've been asked to play in. Visualize yourself behind the decks. See what kind of people hang out there and spend time having a drink, maybe talking to people. Make friends with and chat to the bar staff and bar owners. Bar staff occasionally display a surprisingly good knowledge of music due to the numerous DJs they get to see and hear and the reactions they observe to them. They can also tell you what kind of crowd will be in the night you are programmed to play on.

Get the feeling and vibe of the crowd, see what music they dance to. For DJs who are travelling to another city to play where they've never played before, this obviously doesn't apply. In this case, it's better to talk to the promoter or club owner on what kind of style should go down well.

4. Girls or boys?

Check the girls and the boys carefully when DJing, especially the girls. Why? Because when the girls dance the boys follow. You know how it is. The main hot tip here is get the girls to dance. They lead the dancing, the boys do too, that means (nearly) everyone is dancing. For some reason, it's nicer when girls dance, it gives off a more positive vibe.

So when you get to that point in the night when you have to get people moving (if you're playing in a club or party) then think of the ladies. They tend to favour lighter music with more emotion and with vocals as opposed to harder tunes.

5. Be ready to play outside your circle

If you followed our precious advice on knowing your music for DJing, then you'll be up on this. That means you have everything in your collection, even cheese. "But I don't play cheese" you protest. You don't have to play cheese. You do have to be ready to go outside your realm and play music that you may not like.

I once turned up at a club in Paris and the owner was pretty sure about what he wanted. He explained right away that he wanted well known, accessible tunes. He didn't care for the latest cool Simian Mobile Disco remix and such, he wanted favourites.

Now I didn't do exactly what he wanted, I gave the night my own twist. That meant that I played some cheese, but I used that cheese to get people on my wavelength. At that point, we established a rapport because they knew that the DJ understood what they liked, so they opened out.

Dropping the odd cheese bomb was fine by me, after all, everyone danced in there. Once they got going, they were more receptive to other, different tunes which I could happily drop, confident that they'd continue dancing. Guess what? I got asked back there several times and the owner really insisted I play again. Unfortunately I couldn't make it though as I had other gigs lined up.

The message is: dare to play music you don't particularly like when you're DJing as well. The important thing is that people are happy and dance.

Having the will power to be able do this will get you a better reputation and improved gigs. Who cares if on occasions you drop a cheese bomb, it won't be like that all the time. Remember, it's about what they like, not just about what you like.

6. React to them

When you've been struggling for a bit and people aren't really dancing to what you put on only then they suddenly go unexpectedly crazy to your next tune, make sure you react to them accordingly. When the dancefloor bursts into life, that's a sure sign the last tune you played is right up their street. That means the next tune you play should be a reaction to that; you have to try to keep them on the floor now for as long as you can. Not always easy, but you can do it.

Follow up that last rooflifter with another tune which is in some way similar to the previous one. Not identical, but similar in some aspect, whether it's the style, the energy, the BPM or the key. Give your set some shape and flow and take your people on a musical journey of enjoyment. One last important thing: Have some FUN!

Cheap DJ Systems - How To Get Started Being A DJ

Let's face it. Becoming a DJ is not easy, still look cheap. But with careful planning and is looking for cheap DJ systems can help ease the transition.

The most difficult part of the initial build your money to buy equipment. The situation is like a Catch-22. You must have the equipment for the concerts, but you must be able to afford their first concerts in the location, device. One way to go is to rent only for equipment. Another wayif you're lucky, a friend who agrees that you borrow his equipment to take on him, it would have.

But there's nothing like owning your own DJ equipment. So the best recommendation would be to treat DJing as a hobby in the beginning, because in reality it is. You're not a professional yet. Stilling working but boring 9-5 jobs. But they are making money. And save this money and you might find more cents. Live on Romin noodles for a while '. IfYou must save all the money you will not regret it.

Then you can start business in search of economic systems DJ fledge in turn is a hobby of DJs, a full one. Start scouring the Internet for major purchases. An important piece of equipment is of course the mixer. No need to spend thousands of dollars for a good sound (it helps, but not necessary). You can find really good cheap mixer for a few hundred dollars.

If you scratchThen, of course, a turntable should be a priority. Now she uses a turntable. You do not have the latest and best buy to get started. The same applies to speakers, headphones, bubble machine, etc.

I do not want to sound like a lot of fun so far cheap or equipment used to DJ, but keep in mind that a great DJ is a great, regardless of the equipment. If you have a real talent show, and will pay. A year from now you will be able to affordmore high-tech DJ equipment, but until then, we must remember that we all have to start somewhere.
